Methanol (CH3OH) is the simplest of a long series of organic compounds called alcohols, consisting of a methyl group (CH3) linked with a hydroxy group (OH). Methanol can lower the freezing point of a water-based liquid and increase its boiling point, which makes it an ideal antifreeze to keep cleaning fluids from freezing (i.e., windshield washer fluid). When used in oil and gas industry applications, methanol is injected both continuously and intermittently to prevent the formation of hydrates, mainly in offshore sources. It also lowers the freezing point of water percentages during oil and gas transport.
